When AI and Peer Review Work Together
A new approach to writing instruction that leverages both technology and human connection
At UC Davis, instructors are experimenting with new ways to support student writing by combining AI tools with traditional peer feedback. The project, called PAIRR (Peer and AI Review and Reflection), is built on a simple structure: students get feedback from both classmates and AI, reflect on it, and revise their work.
The goal isn’t to replace peer review or let AI take over. Instead, it’s about using each tool for what it does best. AI can provide clear and detailed comments on sentence structure and organization. Peers, on the other hand, are better at giving feedback on ideas, tone, and whether the writing makes sense to a real reader. Together, they create a fuller picture of how the writing is working—and where it’s not.
Students who’ve tried this approach say it helps. When both AI and peers point out the same issue, it makes revision feel more straightforward. Even when they disagree, the process encourages students to think more critically about their writing and make intentional choices.
Faculty involved in the project have also emphasized that writing is still a human process. Relationships with instructors, TAs, and classmates matter, especially for students who might not have access to other writing support. The PAIRR model doesn’t remove that—it adds another layer.
This approach is about clarity, not shortcuts. It’s about helping students build fundamental skills, with support from both people and technology.
