New PAIRR Packet: Free Resources for Teaching Writing with AI
Tools and strategies for using peer review and AI together to improve writing and build AI literacy
The Peer & AI Review + Reflection (PAIRR) packet is now available for educators looking to integrate AI into writing instruction in thoughtful and equitable ways. These resources are free to use, adapt, and share, and are designed to help students engage critically with both human and AI feedback.
PAIRR follows a five-step process. Students begin with short readings on AI and language equity. They exchange peer feedback on draft assignments and then use an AI tool, under instructor guidance, to gather a second perspective. They compare and reflect on both types of feedback, considering their goals and intended audience, before moving into revision.
This approach was piloted in ten courses at UC Davis, involving more than 650 students. Early results suggest that combining peer and AI review not only enhances writing but also promotes AI literacy by teaching students to evaluate AI output critically, rather than relying on it passively.
The packet contains a comprehensive set of materials, including curated readings, reflection prompts, step-by-step protocols, and sample AI prompts. All can be adapted to fit different disciplines and teaching contexts.
With support from a multi-year California Learning Lab grant, PAIRR is now expanding to include collaborations with community colleges, CSUs, and UC Davis. The aim is to make high-quality writing support and AI literacy accessible across institutions.
